Vaginal Yeast Infection Symptoms

There a  few main symptoms that come with a yeast infection. Most people will have all of them but not always. The main symptoms are:

  • A severe itch. This is perhaps the worst of all the symptoms as it is usually so bad that you cannot help but scratch it. Scratching unfortunately leads to the next symptom.
  • Swollen vagina lips, redness, soreness and tenderness around the vagina and vuvla. There may even be slight bleeding.
  • When urinating you will experience a burning sensation due to the red swollen condition of the vagina.
  • A thick white vaginal discharge that looks a bit like cottage cheese.
  • Pain or discomfort when having sex.

Are You At Risk?

Some women  experience vaginal yeast infection symptoms over and over again, making their lives miserable. Why is that? Well you could fall into a number of categories which I will discuss. Here’s a list of things that lets yeast take hold:

Antibiotics – There are times when everybody needs antibiotics. These days they are prescribed too readily. They are designed to kill off bacteria but unfortunately that includes the good beneficial bacteria that usually resides inside our digestive tracts. Once that is gone the yeast can get a really strong foot hold and be very stubborn to get rid of. As discussed on other pages of this site there are a few options here. Firstly don’t take antibiotics unless absolutely necessary and secondly if you have to then supplement it by restoring the good bacteria. A good quality natural yoghurt containing live cultures such as Lactobicillus Acidophilus is a start. Eat at least one cup per day. Otherwise you can use a probiotic from a health store, they usually come in capsule form or as a powder.

Birth Control Pills – The pill contains estrogen that raises the sugar levels in the vagina which is what yeast feed on.

Steroids  – Steroids are strongly linked with Candida yeast infections.  Steroids increase the glucose (sugar) levels of the blood. This increase in sugar also changes the natural environment of the vagina allowing yeast to thrive as it feeds on sugar.
Steroids actually encourage the growth of Candida yeast, increasing the risk of a yeast infection or increasing the severity of a current yeast infection.

Immunosuppressive Drugs – These drugs shut down the normal immune system allowing yeast to take hold.

Diabetes – Sugar nourishes and feeds yeast. Because diabetics have higher blood sugar levels it’s easier for yeast to breed in their systems.

AIDS Patients – Due to their suppressed immune systems and the drugs they are prescribed.

Severe Stress – Stress can cause all sorts of illness. Stress actually puts a strain on our immune systems resulting in us becoming run down which in turn is creating the perfect environment for a yeast infection.

Menstruation – Due to fluctuating hormone levels including estrogen.

Pregnancy  – When pregnant higher levels of estrogen are produced resulting in a production of glucogen in the vagina. Glucogen is a sugar which feeds yeast.

Diet – This should be a number one area to look at if you’re experiencing regular yeast infection. Obviously since yeast feeds on sugar it’s a must to cut all sugar out. This includes sweet desserts, cakes, lollies etc. Also alcohol has a certain amount of sugar in it so it must also be avoided. Any processed food, packaged or refined food is out along with junk food. To really give your body the best chance to heal, you must get back to basics with your diet.

The above risk factors may help shed some light as to why you are more prone to yeast infections than others. Vaginal yeast infection symptoms can be eliminated but finding out the cause first is the real key to success.
