Some women are lucky enough to only ever suffer one attack of a yeast infection whereas others are plagued by many attacks, one after the other. For the one off attack there are some effective over the counter antifungal medications available which are offered as a cream or suppository. These include Miconazole, Femstat 3, Monistat-1, Canasten and Lotrimin. You may have to get a doctor’s prescription for something stronger if the over the counter drugs are ineffective. These drugs may include Diflucan, Nystatin and Terazol.

For more persistent cases it’s usually a sign that there is an inbalance internally. This could be an immune system deficiency or a problem with the digestive system. In those cases yeast infections respond better to natural solutions and lifestyle changes as prescription and over the counter medications do little more than offer a band aid solution to the problem and provide temporary relief at best.

So what else can you do?  The first thing to do is look at your diet if you’re serious about how to cure a yeast infection. Yeast is found naturally in the body but through our diets yeast can be allowed to grow to levels that are unhealthy. Therefore we have to starve the fungi, that is take away it’s food source which is one of the most important strategies on how to cure a yeast infection. We can do this by avoiding sugars which yeasts thrive on. Most processed or refined foods, alcohol, vegetable oils, milk, white flour and white bread are foods that feed a yeast infection.

Two cloves of garlic per day is beneficial as garlic has the ability to kill the yeast fungus. Also eat plain yoghurt every day, this maintains healthy probiotic bacteria in the gut that prevents the spread of Candida. The yoghurt must contain live cultures of bacteria called Lactobacillus acidophilus which are the friendly bacteria that help control the growth of yeast in the intestines and vagina. In that sort of environment yeast infections are less likely to occur. Yoghurt can also be used externally by dipping a tampon into the yoghurt and inserting it into the vagina. It is best to leave it in the vagina for 4-5 hours and do this daily for 7 days.

All the B vitamins are important, so eat wholemeal bread (not white), brown rice (not white), sunflower seeds and lentils. For zinc eat eggs, sardines and pumpkin seeds.

Coconut oil also has antifungal properties. Several essential oils that include, Lavender, Myrrh, Patchouli, Tagates, Tea Tree and Thyme have antifungal properties and can be added to a bath (do not use essential oils if you are pregnant). Apple Cider Vinegar is another remedy that can be added to a bath, try 2 cups in a bath of warm water that just covers your groin but no deeper than your belly button, then pull your knees up to your chest and sit for at least 15 minutes. Apple Cider Vinegar can also be taken internally, at least 2 teaspoons to a small glass of water daily. Using Apple Cider Vinegar alone wont cure Candida but it certainly will help if you can tolerate vinegar.

So you can see that there are lots of ways to cure a yeast infection. With a few dietary changes and some natural ingredients you should be on your way to beating the dreaded yeast infection.
